Zydeco music, dancing, delicious food and family fun was the order of the day as Alexandria’s Louisiana History Museum held a Cochon de Lait Saturday, April 29 at the grounds of the former Shiloh Baptist Church in downtown Alexandria.
The Shiloh Baptist Church had sat unused for years until obtained by the museum as part of its plans to expand beyond its cramped quarters at the Alexandria Genealogical Library and Museum’s basement. The church building is in dire need of renovation and the Cochon de Lait was part of the group’s efforts to raise the needed funds for the building’s renovation.
The Shiloh Baptist Church was built in 1908 and housed an African-American congregation. It is a historical building and an integral part of our community’s story. Renovating the building to its former condition and housing the Louisiana Historical Museum and its educational resources there would be a wonderful way to preserve our region’s history and honor some of the men and women who shaped our city’s destiny during a difficult time.
Anyone wishing to volunteer or contribute to this worthy cause is invited to contact Ms. Pat Boone at the Alexandria Library and Museum at 503 Washington Street.
