
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Ruth “Grandmama” Voorhies, who left us on Monday, June 29, 2026, at the age of 89. She was born on December 15, 1936, and lived a full, bold, vibrant life, filled with love, creativity, and cherished moments.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, July 2, 2026 at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral with Reverend Joy Antony and Deacon Mike Young officiating. Burial will be in Alexandria Memorial Gardens, Woodworth under the direction of Hixson Brothers, Alexandria.
Pallbearers will be Matthew Roberts, Steve Roberts, Linzey Guillot, Elijah Allen, Jody Voorhies III, and Joseph Voorhies IV.
Ruth was a familiar face at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, where her faith and spirit shone brightly. Known as a devoted homemaker, she poured her heart into her family and home. Ruth had a zest for life, finding joy in the simplicity of watching bull riding and relishing in her hobbies—sewing, collecting dolls, whimsical calligraphy, and drawing. Her artistic spirit was a source of inspiration to many.
Travel was a passion for her, and she loved nothing more than visiting the beach, often in her favorite color, red, where she felt a sense of peace and freedom. She embraced every opportunity to spread love and joy.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Joseph Abel Voorhies, Jr.; son, William “Billy” Voorhies, and parents, William King and Lessie Normand Dean.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Joseph “Jody” Abel Voorhies III; daughter, Victoria V. Guillot and husband, Michael; grandchildren, Jessica Reynolds and husband, Ryan, Catherine “Katy” Marcum and husband, Michael, Ginger Voorhies, Joseph Abel Voorhies IV and wife, Krissy, John Harris Voorhies and partner, Ricky, John Steven Roberts, Jr., Matthew David Roberts, Linzey Victoria Guillot and fiancé, Elijah Allen, Brian Michael Guillot and wife, Laurie, and Cecily Michelle Siegel and husband, Brett; 12 great grandchildren; 2 great, great grandchildren, and numerous other family and friends.
As we remember Ruth, may we find comfort in the memories we created together and the love she so freely gave. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished in our hearts.
