Rapides schools receive library grants, Pineville graduate honored as Young Hero

Several students and schools were recognized during the June meeting of the Rapides Parish School Board for achievements in education and community service.

Cherokee Elementary School, Forest Hill Junior High School and Carter C. Raymond Junior High School were among 220 schools across 38 states selected to receive grants from the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries. Each school will receive $5,000 to expand and enhance its library resources.

The grants are intended to support school libraries by providing funding for books, technology and other educational materials that promote literacy and student learning.

Board members also recognized Maylie S., a recent graduate of Pineville High School, for being named a Louisiana Public Broadcasting Young Hero.

The Young Heroes program honors students who demonstrate academic achievement, community service, resilience in overcoming challenges and a commitment to making a positive impact in their communities. Maylie was one of seven students statewide selected for the recognition.

School officials congratulated the schools and student honoree for their accomplishments and contributions to education and community engagement.
