Pineville police urge residents to secure vehicles as summer crime risks increase

The Pineville Police Department is reminding residents to take extra precautions to protect their vehicles and personal property as summer begins and crimes of opportunity become more common.

According to the department, warmer weather and increased outdoor activity often coincide with a rise in vehicle burglaries, many of which involve unlocked vehicles and valuables left in plain sight.

Police noted that during the summer months, juveniles are out of school and may spend more time unsupervised. While many participate in positive activities, some choose to target unlocked vehicles, making simple security measures especially important.

The department encourages residents to lock their vehicles every time they leave them, even for short periods. Officers also recommend removing valuables such as wallets, phones, electronics, tools and other personal items from vehicles to reduce the risk of theft.

Police further stressed the importance of never leaving firearms inside vehicles, noting that stolen guns are frequently taken from unattended cars and trucks.

While some vehicle owners believe leaving a vehicle unlocked may prevent damage from a broken window, police say unlocked vehicles are significantly more likely to be entered and burglarized.

The department advises residents who choose to leave a vehicle unlocked to ensure there are no valuables inside that could attract thieves.

Officials said taking a few extra seconds to secure a vehicle can help reduce crime opportunities and lower the likelihood of becoming a victim of theft this summer.
