While many people spent Halloween preparing for trick-or-treaters, the Pineville High School swim team took to the pool. The athletes arrived ready to race, bringing plenty of energy to the competition last Saturday at the Robicheaux Recreation Center in Lafayette, where the Rebels tied for third place.
The girls set the tone early, earning first place in the 200-yard Medley Relay. The Broussard sisters squared off in both the 200-yard Individual Medley and the 500 Free. Caroline Broussard, a junior, won both events while Tori Broussard, her older sister, was runner-up twice, and both posted state qualification times.
The other Lady Rebel swimmers were not to be outdone. Freshman Gisele Prejean, senior Ashley Seal, sophomore Gabrielle Bunch and senior Amelia Gauthier all posted top eight finishes.
Freshman Ben Nelson led off the Rebel boys swimmers with a second-place finish in the 500 Freestyle. He and another freshman, Hunter Clair, battled each other in the 100 Breaststroke with Nelson winning and Clair right behind.
Sophomore David Williams raced very well and is only 4/100 of a second from getting a state qualifying mark in the 50 Free. Clair showed off all four strokes in the 200 Individual Medley, turning in a strong showing for fourth place.
