It wasn’t easy beating Texas College a year ago, when the Texans pushed Louisiana Christian’s football team to the limit in a 12-7 Wildcats win.
Guarding against a letdown may be the toughest challenge facing LCU (7-1 overall, 4-0 Sooner Athletic Conference) this time around against a winless Texas College squad playing on its homefield in Tyler. Kickoff of Saturday’s contest against the Steers (0-6, 0-5 SAC) is set for 5 p.m. at Mewbourne Field.
The contest will be live streamed on 446Sports through YouTube.
LCU and Texas College have three common opponents this season. Texas Wesleyan was topped Oct. 10 by the Wildcats 42-27 after drubbing the Texans 56-20 two weeks earlier. Texas College fell 54-26 to Wayland Baptist, which LCU beat 44-27. Langston handled the Texas 53-34 but was crushed 70-14 on Sept. 5 at LCU.
Last week, the Steers were drubbed on the road in Arizona by Ottawa, 69-7. Meanwhile, Louisiana Christian was holding off a one-win Nelson team on the road, 31-23.
Saturday’s game is the second in a string of three consecutive away from Pineville for LCU.
The Wildcats are averaging 47.4 points per game, while allowing 29.8. LCU is producing 483 offensive yards per game, 231 rushing and 252 passing.
Jaterrius Johnson (85.4 yards per game, seven touchdowns) and Datlan Cunningham (78.3, with nine TDs) lead the running attack.
Quarterback Bryce Perkins is posting 228.8 pass yards on average, completing 58 percent of his 192 throws with a touchdown coming every 10 attempts (19 total). He’s been intercepted seven times.
EJ Scott, like Cunningham an ASH product, is LCU’s leading receiver with 35 catches for 655 yards and five TDs. Omarius Davis is close behind with 32 receptions for 587 yards and seven scores.
The Wildcat defense has given up 285.5 passing yards and 388 total yards on average.
