Kisatchie National Forest firefighter dies in line of duty while responding to Rapides Parish wildfire

The U.S. Forest Service announced the line-of-duty death of 24-year-old wildland firefighter Kaitlyn “KK” Gallagher of Alexandria, Louisiana, who died Wednesday, October 14, 2026, while responding to a wildfire in Kisatchie National Forest.

According to the U.S. Forest Service, Gallagher was struck by a tree while responding to the Broken Creek Fire, a 10-acre wildfire in Rapides Parish that has since been contained.

Lisa Lewis, Forest Supervisor, expressed condolences following Gallagher’s death.

“As we experience this terrible tragedy, our prayers are with KK’s family, friends, and all who knew her,” Lewis said. “The loss of KK is deeply felt throughout the Forest Service, the entire wildland fire community, and our local community. We extend our deepest condolences to everyone who was touched by her life.”

Gallagher joined the U.S. Forest Service in 2025 as a Wildland Firefighter Apprentice.

During her career, she spent two summers working on the Shoshone National Forest in Wyoming, serving on both engine and wildland fire modules.

While assigned to Kisatchie National Forest, Gallagher assisted with prescribed burning operations and wildfire response efforts.

The Forest Service described Gallagher as a valued member of the organization whose enthusiasm for life, dedication to service and love of the outdoors were evident in her work.

According to her family, Gallagher was also passionate about sharing her Christian faith and working with young people.

She served as a youth leader at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church in Alexandria and coached girls basketball and softball at Holy Savior Menard High School, also in Alexandria.

The U.S. Forest Service stated that it is providing support to Gallagher’s family, fellow firefighters and other employees affected by her death.

The Forest Service Honor Guard is also assisting Gallagher’s family and providing a flag memorial service in her honor.
