The Police Jury will consider today naming a section of La 498 for a late veterans advocate.
Marion Polk, who died at age 72 in 2021, was former national commander of AMVETS and member of Alexandria Post 7-LA, located on England Drive, and three times commander of its eight-states district.
Polk, retired from the Coast Guard, testified before US Senate and House committees on behalf of veterans interests and worked on such projects from coast to coast.
Today’s agenda item, sponsored by Danny Bordelon, appears to refer to what is now popularly known as Airbase Road, to its England Drive intersection, as the proposed Marion LaFay Polk Memorial Highway, and asks LA DOTD to erect and maintain such signage.
Also on the agenda are items relating to recreation potential within the Monroe Street area. Both, proposed by District I Juror Jay Scott, were previewed last week by the Tourism & Economic Planning committee.
One authorizes the jury, the School Board and the City of Alexandria to discuss potential youth programs in that area.
The other would authorize bond counsel to prepare a ballot proposal creating a Police Jury District I Recreation District and levying a property tax within the district to finance program operations.
