The City of Alexandria and Alexandria Utility System issued an update regarding the excess gas odor affecting parts of the city.
When the strong gas odor was first reported by citizens, an examination of the city’s gas system was conducted, and a malfunction was identified. AUS crews corrected the initial equipment issue at the city injection station.
However, further investigation determined that the widespread complaints were the result of a significant release of mercaptan from a leak at a local business that supplied the odorant to numerous natural gas companies.
The leak created a mercaptan plume that traveled with the wind across a large portion of the city.
Because mercaptan was heavier than air, residents could continue to smell a high concentration of the odorant in various areas as the plume was carried by the wind. The city said the plume posed no danger and would dissipate naturally.
Residents who suspected an actual gas leak on their property were advised to evacuate immediately, avoid using electrical switches or phones and call 911 or the Fire Department from a safe distance.
