
The Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office is warning Apple device users about a new scam targeting individuals through phone calls and text messages.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, scammers are claiming that an Apple Account has been compromised and that an unauthorized charge has been made. The messages use phrases such as “unusual activity” and “compromised account” to appear legitimate.
The Sheriff’s Office reminds residents to be cautious when receiving text messages or phone calls instructing them to take action regarding an account. Officials noted that in one example, the phone number originated from outside the country.
The FBI has been investigating overseas operations in Southeast Asia where entire villages are dedicated to online and text message scams.
The Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office encourages residents not to fall victim to the scam and to share the warning with friends, family and social media followers.
