Whether you’re looking for a creative morning with friends or a fun, faith-filled Friday night for the kids, First United Methodist Church of Alexandria (FUMCA) is offering free opportunities for all ages this July.
FUMCA’s Urban Sketching Art Ministry, led by Artist-in-Residence Rev. Jean Sanders, continues its mission of making art accessible, welcoming, and rooted in community. Following June’s successful “Sketchin’ in the Neighborhood” gathering on Hill Street, the group returns for Part 2 on Saturday, July 18, at 9:00 a.m.
Sketchers will meet at 822 Bush Avenue in Alexandria’s historic Garden District, with parking available in front of Rugg Elementary School.
Urban sketching is the practice of drawing on location, capturing places and moments through direct observation. Participants of every skill level—from complete beginners to experienced artists—are invited to slow down, notice the world around them, and tell the story of a place through drawing. The emphasis is not on creating perfect artwork but on being present, observing carefully, and recording life as it unfolds.
Since launching in October 2025, FUMCA’s Urban Sketching ministry has become a growing community of artists and curious beginners alike. Recent sketch outings have included the Alexandria Farmers Market on the FUMCA campus, Tamp & Grind Coffee, the Alexandria Museum of Art, the Original Holi Fest Cenla, and last month’s neighborhood sketch walk. Each gathering offers a new opportunity to experience Central Louisiana through fresh eyes while connecting with others in a relaxed and encouraging environment.
Participants are encouraged to bring their favorite sketching supplies, though newcomers are always welcome and guidance is readily available. There is no cost and no registration is required.
Urban Sketching reflects FUMCA’s belief that creativity, observation, and community belong together. By taking art beyond the studio and into neighborhoods, parks, festivals, and local gathering places, the ministry continues to create spaces where people can connect through creativity while discovering the beauty already present in everyday life.
