Mr. William Patrick “Sonar” Vlk, 60, of Alexandria, Louisiana, entered eternal rest on Thursday, July 2, 2026. He was born in Rota, Spain on October 10, 1965, to William and Patricia Vlk, who precede him in death.
A Celebration of Life service honoring his life will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at 2:00 pm at the American Legion Post 3 in Alexandria, Louisiana.
Affectionately known as “Sonar,” William lived a life defined by service, loyalty, and an unwavering dedication to his family, his fellow veterans, and his community. A proud United States Navy Veteran, he served as a submariner, a role that perfectly reflected his strength, discipline, and commitment to something greater than himself.
Following his military service, Sonar continued answering the call to serve by becoming a tireless advocate for veterans. He held leadership positions such as as Commander of The American Legion and other office positions with Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Disabled American Veterans (DAV), AMVETS, Forty & Eight (40 & 8), and the Sons of the American Legion. His devotion to these organizations was more than a responsibility, it was a passion. Whether organizing events, mentoring fellow veterans, or faithfully overseeing bingo at the Legion, Sonar found joy in bringing people together. His presence made everyone feel welcome, and the friendships he built will endure for generations.
Sonar never met a stranger. His larger-than-life personality, strong convictions, and unmistakably stern opinions were matched only by his generous heart. He was a practical jokester who delighted in making others laugh and never passed up an opportunity for a little friendly competition, especially if it involved his beloved grandchildren. To them, “Papa” was their biggest cheerleader, fiercest competitor, and greatest source of unconditional love. His grandchildren were truly the light of his life and his greatest pride.
At the center of William’s life was his beloved wife, Kitty. Together, Kitty and Sonar were the heart, strength, and foundation of their family. Side by side, they created a home filled with love, laughter, resilience, and unwavering support. Their partnership was admired by all who knew them and will remain an enduring example of love and devotion.
William leaves behind a legacy of honor, service, laughter, and unconditional love. Those left behind to cherish his memories are his loving and devoted wife, Kitty, who was with him for 22 years and married for 14; children, William Michael Vlk, Thomas Vice (Nicole), Amanda Parsons (Brian), Julia Thoulion (Billy), and Laura Floyd (Larry); and all his grandchildren and foster children. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, proud father and grandfather, loyal friend, respected veteran, and a man who never hesitated to stand up for what he believed.
His family takes comfort in knowing that while Sonar has completed his final watch, his legacy will forever remain in the hearts of those he loved and those who loved him.
