Malcolm Larvadain a mayoral candidate

Alexandria councilman Malcolm Larvadain will affirm this afternoon what has been forecast for some time — he’s running for mayor in November.
His official announcement will come at The Next Chapter: Alexandria 2026, an event to which the public is invited at 4 p.m. at Hotel Bentley.
The District 1 councilman becomes the second announced aspirant in the November 3 contest.
Lorenzo Davis Sr., shovels also ran in 2022, declared his candidacy earlier. Mayor Jacques Roy, in his fourth term (non-consecutive) has not formally said yea or nay.
Larvadain, who does not have to give up his council post to run, is in the second year of his current term.
He previously served (unopposed when running to succeed his brother Ed, now a state representative) from 2016 thru 2020, lost in a runoff in 2020, then took the seat back in 2024.
Affordable housing is a recurring interest of Larvadain’s and, like every other public official, he is concerned about crime.
An attorney, he is chairman of the council’s Legal Committee.
The mayor’s race is one several city offices on the Fall ballot.
They include the council at-large post held by Jim Villard, council District 2 held by Gary Clark and District 4 Lizzie Felter.
Other municipal offices up for election are judge (Richard Starling) and marshal (Jerome Hopewell).
Candidate qualifying is August 5-7.
