Remembering Meade H. Phelps Jr.

Meade H. Phelps Jr., husband, father, and Poppy, passed away on May 9 after a long battle with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. Meade was born on November 28, 1946, in Alexandria, LA, and grew up in Natchitoches. He graduated from Menard High School in 1964, Northwestern State University in 1967, and LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans in 1971. After completing a residency at Charity Hospital, he spent his career in the Emergency Room at East Jefferson General Hospital in Metairie. He also dabbled in real estate for 26 years.

Meade married Peg Short in 1972, and was the very proud father of Jenny Phelps Zimmer and Susan Phelps McLin, and the father-in-law of Charlie Zimmer and Steve McLin. He was also the enthusiastic Poppy of Abby Zimmer Chaney (husband Josh), Jacob Zimmer, Braden McLin, and Alyssa McLin.

He was an avid tennis and pickleball player, and a prolific gardener, and was a member of numerous garden clubs. He also loved to fish. Most of all, he was a family man who greatly enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and sisters.

Meade is preceded in death by his father Meade H. Phelps Sr., his mother Frances McClung Phelps, his sister and brother-in-law Alice and Roger Williams, and his brothers-in-law Dick Graham and Ed O’Boyle. He is survived by his sisters Lucile Graham and Meade O’Boyle, and his sister and brother-in-law Cecile and Rock Versace.

The family would like to thank Dr. Jayne Gurtler and Dr. Anthony Russo, as well as the staff of multiple units at East Jefferson General Hospital, for their care of Meade during his illness.

Visitation will be on Saturday, May 16, from 10 am to noon at St. Clement of Rome Church, 4317 Richland Avenue, Metairie, followed by a funeral mass at noon. Please wear the color of your favorite flower. There will be a celebration of his life at 1:00 pm at Drago’s Restaurant, 3232 N. Arnoult Road in Metairie. His ashes will be placed in the family vault at the American Cemetery in Natchitoches at a later date.
