On April 19, 2026, Oliver Grammer, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at the age of 97 at the Illinois Veterans Nursing Home in Anna, Illinois, with military honors. He was born in Pomona, Illinois, on June 24, 1928, to Ardell and Dora (Fleming) Grammer.

Grammer graduated from University High School in Carbondale, Illinois, in 1947. He initially worked on his father’s farm near Pomona before joining the U.S. Army in 1950 during the Korean War. He served in the 990th Signal Operations Corps at Camp Gordon near Augusta, Georgia, and was honorably discharged in 1952.

Following his military service, Grammer worked in a variety of roles that utilized his mechanical skills before beginning a long career with General Telephone and Electronics (GTE) as a transmission technician. After obtaining his Federal Communications Commission (FCC) license, he specialized in electronics repair and design, working through major technological changes from landline telephone systems to microwave transmission and eventually cellular communications. He earned a reputation among colleagues for being able to fix nearly anything and was known as a perfectionist with exceptional attention to detail.

In 1957, Grammer obtained his amateur “ham” radio license, assigned call sign K9KZC. He remained active in the hobby throughout his life, building and designing radio systems in various settings and communicating with operators locally and around the world.

In the mid-1960s, he earned his pilot’s license and purchased an airplane, which he enjoyed for many years before selling it as he and his wife, Martha, prepared to build their home in the country south of Murphysboro. He also restored tractors, excavators, and other machinery, relying on his self-taught knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems.

Grammer also enjoyed playing electric and steel guitar and singing, often performing classic country songs by artists such as Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, and Waylon Jennings. He continued playing music into his 90s.

He married Martha Jane Nausley of Murphysboro on July 10, 1954. Together they raised one son, Daryl. The couple enjoyed camping, fishing, watching St. Louis Cardinals baseball, classic western television shows, and Sunday sermons. They were lifelong dog lovers and always had a dog as part of their family, including their miniature black poodle, Muffin.

Grammer shared his love of camping with his grandchildren, Madison and Marshall, and met his great-grandson, Sawyer Scott Overby, in December 2022.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Martha Jane Grammer; his parents, Ardell and Dora Grammer; his brother Ray Grammer; and his sisters Delores Stearns, Sybil Littlejohn, and Marie Grammer.

He is survived by his son, Daryl; daughter-in-law, Teri (Tish) Grammer; granddaughter Madison Overby and her husband Bradford of Benton, Kentucky; grandson Marshall Grammer and his wife Carlye of Benton, Kentucky; great-grandson Sawyer Scott Overby; nephew Gary Grammer; and nieces Pamela LaReau of Plano, Texas, and Pat Scott of Pineville, Louisiana.

A memorial service will be held April 30, 2026, at Crain Pleasant Grove–Murdale Funeral Home in Murphysboro, Illinois. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 12 p.m., with interment immediately afterward.

Titus 3:5 states: “He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.”

England Authority commissioners will consider at their meeting today a Payment in Lieu of Taxes agreement related to Applied Digital’s data center near Boyce.

The PILOT, an often-used incentive in economic development packaging, allows the company to factor a fixed cost rather than a potential fluctuating one into its operating projections, and recipients to do the same with agreed payment schedules.

As one might expect with a $3 billion investment involved, the sums are large.

The terms are contingent on the company executing a lease of at least 15 years with a recognized US-based tech company with consolidated annual revenues of $100 billion or an affiliate of such.

Tax payments over the 15 years and two five-year optional extensions would total close to $400 million.

Additionally $18 million would be paid each year for three years as seed funding for a matching funds trust for regional community and infrastructure development and support for local taxing bodies.

The document does not pinpoint where that trust is housed, nor does it stipulate where an annual administrative fee, capped at $600,000, is banked.

A new agreement is called for should any expansion occur at the center beyond 300 megawatt critical IT load.

While the data center agreement is still in formative stages another major Authority project – a UCore plant – is underway.

Commissioners today will get an update from plant manager Greg Montgomery on the $75 million investment to separate rare earth elements used in permanent magnets and other clean energy applications.

Also on the agenda is a proposed pay raise for Executive Director Ralph Hennessy.

The Finance/Audit Committee is expected to recommend an increase to $240,000 annually, effective May 1.

According to the most-recent Authority audit, Hennessy, who took the job in December 2022, had a base salary of $209,615 in the year ending last June 30. Total package cost was $266,733.

The current fiscal year budget lists a $215,000 base.

Discussion of a raise apparently began at an Admin/Legal Committee meeting this month, when it was aired in executive session.

That recommendation will be heard by the Finance panel today and, if endorsed, passed on to the full Authority.

City officials and community leaders gathered in downtown Pineville to celebrate the launch of a new high-speed fiber internet initiative aimed at expanding connectivity across the area.

Mayor Joe Bishop and Councilman Randy O’Neal joined representatives from AT&T to officially cut the ribbon on the first phase of the project, which will bring fiber internet service to more than 300 residential and business customers.

The initial rollout also includes connectivity upgrades for Pineville Elementary School and Louisiana Christian University, providing enhanced digital resources for students, educators and faculty.

City leaders described the project as a significant step toward improving infrastructure and supporting economic growth, education and daily communication needs in the community.

Officials said the expansion is part of a broader effort to ensure Pineville remains competitive and prepared for future technological demands.

The American Red Cross is inviting Central Louisiana residents to attend the CENLA Disaster Bootcamp on Saturday, May 9 from 8 AM – 4 PM. This hands-on training event will be held at the Red Cross Alexandria Office, located at 425 Bolton Ave. in Alexandria.

As hurricane season approaches, this bootcamp offers a critical opportunity for volunteers to build the skills necessary to support their community. Attendees can choose from one of two specialized training paths:

• Sheltering: Participants learn how to set up and operate a Red Cross shelter, assisting families and creating a safe environment during disasters.

• Disaster Action Team (DAT): Volunteers discover how to respond to local emergencies, such as home fires, by providing emotional support, financial assistance, and recovery guidance to families.

Walter Murrell Holsomback, 81, of Pineville passed from this life on Sunday, April 19, 2026, in Houston, Texas. He was born to the late J.O. Holsomback and Ruby Walker Holsomback in Alexandria, Louisiana on February 10, 1945. A native of Pineville, he was a graduate of Pineville High School and Louisiana College where he received his undergraduate degree. Afterward, he earned his Master’s degree from Northwestern State University. He spent his working career as a teacher and coach in Rapides Parish. He also worked with Tudor Construction and was a classroom instructor for the Youth Challenge Program at Camp Beauregard. Walter loved the church and was very active in his home congregation. He served for 25 years in Honduras as part of a mission’s group.

Walter loved his family and was proud of his children and grandchildren. He often took them fishing or riding four-wheelers. He enjoyed attending their sports events. He loved to watch sports and talk about sports with them and was interested in all the girls’ and boys’ activities.

In 1963, he married his wife, Cheryl Carlisle. Together they spent 63 wonderful years together raising their four children; Brad Holsomback (Jennifer), Tracey Aulds (Ron); Kandy Bozeman (David); and Brett Holsomback (Chrissy).

He was blessed with eight grandchildren, Kameron, Ethan, Will, Callen, Addison, Annabeth, Alyse, and Bentley.

In addition to his wife, children, and grandchildren, he leaves behind his two close brothers, Tom Holsomback (Mary) and Jimmy Holsomback (Phyllis).

Pallbearers will be Brad Holsomback, Ron Aulds, Brett Holsomback, Mike Holsomback, David Bozeman, Ethan Bozeman, Will Bozeman, and Callen Bozeman.

Honorary pallbearers will be Tom Holsomback and Jimmy Holsomback.

Funeral services for Glenda Freeland are scheduled for 2 PM Thursday, April 23, 2026, in the chapel of Golden Funeral Home, with Bro. Tim Post and Bro. Rayburn McLarrin officiating. Interment will follow in Pine Grove South Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday, prior to the service, beginning at 12 noon.

Glenda Josephine Becton Freeland, loving wife, mother, and Nana, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2026, in Alexandria, Louisiana, surrounded by her devoted husband and sons. She was 84 years old.

Glenda was born on September 9, 1941, in Bryceland, Louisiana, to Andrew Drane and Addie Margaret Daniel Becton. She was raised with strong values of family, faith, and love. These qualities that would define her life and the way she cared for others.

She was the heart of her family, known for her steady presence, warm smile, her deep love, and the way she made everyone feel at home. She loved life traveling the world, camping, shopping and was very sentimental. As a wife, she stood faithfully beside her husband, Jerry Freeland for 63 years. As a mother, she poured her life into her sons, Jerrell and Steve. But it was in her role as “Nana” that her joy truly overflowed. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and delight.

She is survived by her loving husband, Jerry Freeland; her sons, Jerrell Freeland and his wife Beverly, and Steve Freeland and his wife Rebecca; her grandchildren, Nikki Reynolds and her husband Colby, Sara-Katherine Freeland, and Steven Alan Freeland, Jr.; her great-grandchildren, Alexa Kay Reynolds and Mark Aiden Reynolds; and her sister, Nancy Becton Benson, sisters-in-law, Sue Becton, Avanell Bennett, Becky Morrison and husband Wendell, and her sweet puppy “Chloe”.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Addie Becton; her brother, Charles Ray Becton; and her father- and mother-in-law, Earl and Mildred Freeland.

Glenda’s life was a quiet but powerful testimony of love, devotion, and family. The legacy she leaves behind lives on in each life she touched, especially within the generations who will carry her love forward. She was a devoted and faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church and the Loyalty Sunday School class.

Though she will be deeply missed, we rejoice in knowing she is now in the presence of her Savior, surrounded by her most beautiful home in heaven.

Pallbearers will be Barry Becton, John Add Benson, Jim Bonnet, Earl Freeland, Paul Eric Freeland and Steven A. Freeland, Jr.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Charles Burns, Spencer “Knot” Herrington and Acie Orr.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you for the compassion care shown to Glenda by the staff of Rapides General Hospital and Dr. Nicholas Harris and Dr. Harry Hawthorne.

The Pineville Police Department is investigating a viral social media incident involving the handling of a deer carcass behind a local restaurant.

According to authorities, officers were dispatched April 21 to the 2900 block of Cottingham Expressway after receiving a complaint that a restaurant employee was seen skinning a dead animal.

Upon arrival, officers observed evidence indicating the animal was a deer. It was reported the deer had been collected after being found deceased along the roadside.

During the investigation, officers discovered the deer carcass stored in a freezer alongside other food items that were allegedly intended to be served to customers.

Due to the circumstances, police contacted the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the Louisiana Department of Health. Representatives from both agencies responded and are handling their respective investigations into potential wildlife and health code violations.

Police officials said any further questions regarding violations or health concerns should be directed to those agencies as the investigation continues.

Mark Wood hit an ace when starting what has become his annual fund-raising golf tournament.

Held at Oak Wing during or near Masters week in April it has become a cornerstone campaign funds event for the Sheriff. 

His recently filed report for campaign finances in 2025 consists of contributions of $83,500, including in-kind, almost all dated April 11. 

A great many expenditures among the $65,400 for the year were in connection with the golf event. 

According to the report Wood’s fund started the year with $45,900 on hand and had a $60,700 balance at year’s end. 

Several hundred contributions are recorded by the Wood campaign fund as being received on the same date, ranging from $20 up. 

DJ’s Bail Bonds contributed $3,500. At $2,500 were Valex Federal Credit Union, National Waste Management Louisiana, Neblett Beard & Arsenault, Phillip Terrell Campaign Account, Spurgeon Law Firm and Tarver Companies. 

Wood is in his second four-year term. The next election is in October 2027.

Mayor Joe Bishop and Councilman Dorn joined regional leaders in Baton Rouge for Cenla Day at the Legislature, an annual advocacy event focused on priorities impacting Central Louisiana.

According to the City of Pineville, the visit included meetings with state legislators and agency officials to discuss infrastructure improvements, economic development initiatives, and local funding needs.

Key topics included efforts to improve roads and bridges, attract new jobs and investment to the region, and secure funding for city services and quality-of-life projects.

City officials emphasized the importance of having Pineville represented in statewide discussions and credited the Central Louisiana Regional Chamber of Commerce and local legislative delegation for hosting the event.

Leaders say continued advocacy efforts are aimed at strengthening growth and improving long-term opportunities for residents across the city and region.

A mix of clouds, warming temperatures and periodic rain chances is expected across Rapides Parish throughout the week, with highs climbing into the upper 80s by the weekend.

Wednesday will bring partly sunny skies with a 50 percent chance of showers and highs in the lower 80s. Conditions will turn partly cloudy Wednesday night with lows in the lower 60s.

On Thursday, mostly sunny skies are expected early, followed by a 50 percent chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Highs will remain in the lower 80s. Thursday night will turn mostly cloudy with lows in the mid-60s.

By Friday, clouds will give way to some sunshine, with a 40 percent chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms and highs in the mid-80s. A chance of storms will linger into Friday night with partly cloudy skies and lows in the upper 60s.

The weekend will continue the warm and unsettled pattern. Saturday will start mostly cloudy before becoming mostly sunny, with a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms and highs in the upper 80s. Sunday will follow a similar trend, beginning cloudy and turning partly sunny with a 30 percent chance of afternoon storms.

Looking ahead to Monday, skies will be cloudy in the morning, becoming partly sunny with a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms and highs remaining in the upper 80s.

Residents should expect warm conditions with occasional showers and thunderstorms, particularly during the afternoon hours.
