Remembering Arthur “Sonny” Seward

Our beloved Arthur “Sonny” Seward left this world to stand in God’s glory on April, 11, 2026. Born on January 25, 1935 in Dry Prong, Louisiana, Sonny was a gentle and loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend, teacher and coach.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday April 17, 2026, at First Baptist Church, Dry Prong, Louisiana with Bro. Kevin Goodwin and Bro. Lloyd Whitman officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Following the service Sonny will be laid to rest at Dry Prong Cemetery in Dry Prong, Louisiana. Serving as pallbearers will be Blane Seward, Carson Seward, Michael Bearden, Noah Bearden, Aiden McCartney and Ed Dale “Skip” Lavespere. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Coach Seward’s Verda High School Basketball Team.

Sonny was a resident of Grant Parish. He was employed as a teacher, coach, principal and supervisor for 33 years- the majority of which was with the Grant Parish School System. He loved all of his students, his fellow employees, his players, and everyone he encountered during his work years. He loved to recall stories of his days spent involved in education and coaching.

When Sonny retired he started his second full-time career- hunting, fishing, and chasing ballparks and gymnasiums all over this state to watch his sons and grandchildren coach and play whatever type of sport they were involved in. If you went to the ballpark or gymnasium at some point in the last 30 years we are certain you ran into Sonny.

Sonny was a skilled white perch fisherman and could be found on Little River or Iatt Lake whenever he wasn’t at a ballgame. Many people in Grant Parish have been the recipient of a pack of Sonny Seward white perch and if you were truly blessed you also got to participate in the frying of his famous hushpuppies and those fish at his home. May everyone enjoy retirement like Sonny Seward did.

Sonny was a faithful man. He was faithful to his loving wife Peggy for 63 years. He adored his sons and grandchildren- if they were participating in something he was there. He was a people person; he loved his friends and always had a friendly smile on his face.

He was a faithful member of Dry Prong First Baptist Church and could be found on his pew every Sunday. If God loves a gentle and kind man who was slow to anger, then Sonny Seward has a special place in heaven.

Sonny was a veteran of the United States Army. He served his country honorably for two years.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents Hazel Jean Seward and Arthur “Pop” Seward.

Sonny is survived by his loving wife Peggy Horton Seward; sons Shane Seward (Jane), Shawn Seward (Amy) and Stan Seward (Alayna). He leaves behind many beautiful memories for his grandchildren; Blane Seward (Sage), Payton Seward, Sisalee Seward, Carson Seward (Grace), Cory McCartney (Allen Michael) and one great grandchild Aiden McCartney.
