Rapides Parish deputies search for escaped suspect after domestic disturbance arrest

Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies are searching for a 25-year-old Alexandria man who escaped custody early Wednesday morning following a domestic disturbance call involving a child.

Deputies responded around 2:41 a.m. to the 4700 block of North Bolton Avenue in Alexandria in reference to a reported domestic disturbance. Initial information indicated the suspect may have been armed with a handgun, though no firearm was later found.

Upon arrival, deputies located and arrested Jamir Yasin Baxter, 25, of Alexandria. He was handcuffed and placed in the back of a patrol unit while deputies continued their investigation and interviewed victims.

Authorities said Baxter later damaged a plexiglass divider inside the patrol unit, broke through into the front seat area, opened the door and fled the scene. Deputies were unable to locate him after a search of the area. The escape was later confirmed through in-car video footage.

Sheriff’s detectives, along with RPSO K-9 units and Special Operations personnel, have been searching for Baxter since his escape. Investigators say multiple leads have developed and the case remains active.

Officials also warned that anyone found to have assisted Baxter in avoiding capture will face arrest and charges.

Baxter is wanted on multiple charges, including domestic abuse battery with a child present, domestic abuse aggravated assault, possession of Schedule II narcotics, illegal possession of Schedule II with a child present, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal damage to property, obstruction of justice, theft and simple escape.

He is described as a Black male, 25 years old, 5 feet 4 inches tall, approximately 130 pounds, with short dreadlocks and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing brown pants, no shirt and still wearing handcuffs.
