Save the date: ‘Emerge’ surfaces, honors memories of Katrina 20 years later

August 29 marked the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina—a moment that forever reshaped New Orleans, its people, and its creative spirit.

Twenty years later, Louisiana pauses to remember: the lives lost, the communities disrupted, the resilience tested. Louisiana also honors the courage and resolve of artists who stayed—who chose to create here, in the wake of devastation, reinvesting in the cultural life of this extraordinary city.

It’s in that spirit that Emerge: New Orleans Artists from the Saratoga Collection comes to life—featuring more than 40 artists who lived and worked in New Orleans in the aftermath of Katrina, capturing not only the pain but the stirring rebirth of art and community.

Join the Alexandria Museum of Art, where the platinum anniversary of Katrina meets a hopeful future through art. Emerge will be on view beginning Nov. 1 with an opening reception on Nov. 7.

Through paint, print, portraiture, and installation, these artists offer a snapshot—and a celebration—of New Orleans in transition, strong in its roots, vivid in its creativity. Remember. Rebuild. Emerge.
