New parole scam targeting family members of inmates

A new scam being directed toward family members of people in the parish jail has come to the RPSO’s attention.

According to a report made over the weekend, a man claimed to be a parole officer (RPSO does not employ parole officers) for the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office named Robert Morrison. The scammer told the potential victim they would have to pay $500 for their familyy member to be moved to a rehab center from DC1.

The scammer wanted the potential victim to set up a Cashapp account to send money through that platform. When the scammer was told the would-be victim would not use Cashapp, the scammer fell back on the old scammer way and asked them to go to a store and get a Visa giftcard and pay that way.

Of course this is a scam. Again, law enforcement will not call and solicit money.

RPSO in conjunction with the District Attorney’s Office does have an Addiction Resistance Program where they do assist people who are eligible to get into rehab programs. There is also Drug Court and Behavioral Health Court to assist people who have addictions.

For more information on these programs, call RPSO at 318-449-4362, the Rapides District Attorney’s Office at 318-473-6650, or the 9th Judicial District Judges Office at 318-443-6893, Monday through Friday. Be vigilant against such calls and claims.
