Pineville’s Recycling Program discontinued due to contamination

The City of Pineville announced the discontinuation of its recycling program on Friday, June 13. What began with promise, supported in cooperation with the Louisiana National Guard, has unfortunately come to an end. The City expressed sadness, noting that despite its best efforts, the program faced insurmountable challenges.

The bins, a symbol of the community’s commitment to the environment, became overwhelmed with items that simply couldn’t be recycled. We consistently found things like milk jugs mixed in with clear plastic bottles, and far too often, household garbage found its way into the containers meant for recyclables. Even after changing the signage and moving the bins to the Public Works Department, hoping for a clearer understanding of what was acceptable, the contamination persisted.

The reality is that the intensive hours that the City’s dedicated personnel spent manually sorting through these materials, trying to salvage what little could be sent to the National Guard, became unsustainable. It’s a disheartening outcome, and the City understands this news will be disappointing to many. They truly regret having to suspend the program, but they will continue to search for a more effective and sustainable solution for managing the city’s recyclables in the future.
