A trip to the operating room was recently simulated in Amy Christman’s 7th grade math class at Tioga Junior High.
Students donned surgery gear and reported to their working stations to collect puzzle pieces to create a body. The students then were divided into teams to perform surgeries.
During the lesson, students were tasked with dissecting compound shapes to find the area of each shape inside. To perform with surgical precision, they were given formulas for each shape similar to what will be given on a reference sheet on the LEAP test. Just like how certain parts of a body function for certain things, students had to determine the shape so they could correctly choose the formula that would help them find the area of each compound figure. After finishing each station, students were able to collect the pieces they needed to build the final shape.
Christman and her surgeons discussed how this lesson would help solidify their knowledge of formulas and their importance.
