Esler Regional Airport hasn’t been the primary aviation focus in Rapides Parish since the mid-1990’s but remains an active site for military and general aviation use.
Once commercial traffic moved to Alexandria International Airport following closure of England Air Force Base, Esler faded into the background.
Eventually the parish leased the facility to the Louisiana National Guard and it is now a vital training site as well as a busy fueling location for military and civilian aircraft.
The Police Jury has awarded a Professional Services Contract to Meyer, Meyer, LaCroix & Hixson to prepare plans for improvements to the terminal.
Federal Aviation Administration grant funds awarded earlier this year (upwards of $900,000) for the project require no local match.
The jury issued a formal Request For Proposals once the grant was awarded.
The project includes but is limited to, roof replacement, window replacements, and HVAC replacement.
