Kathryn Lovejoy Haas was born on January 10, 1930, in San Antonio, Texas, to Lucille and Otto Hannich. Better known by her family and friends as Lovejoy, she graduated valedictorian from St. Mary’s High School in San Antonio in 1947 where she played oboe in the symphony orchestra and sang soprano in the Choristers choir group. Lovejoy was awarded a four-year scholarship to Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio. As was common during the war, she began corresponding with Arthur Haas, Jr., a young soldier from South Texas whom she had met before he shipped out near the end of the conflict. In one letter, Arthur proposed and she accepted. Immediately on his return, they married on April 21,1948, and settled in South Texas where Arthur worked in the petroleum industry and tended a small family ranch. Lovejoy was an inveterate tomboy as a young girl in San Antonio, who shocked her mother and aunts with her very unlady-like habit of swinging between rope Tarzan swings that she hung from the tops of the towering pecan trees in her backyard. No wonder that life in South Texas suited her. Lovejoy was a quick study as Arthur taught her to shoot, ride horses, and rope cattle on their fledgling ranch. In 1957, they relocated with their growing family to Premont, Texas, one of the many small oil boom towns that had sprung up during the mid 50s, when Arthur took a position with the newly formed Trunkline Gas Transmission Company. After several transfers within the company to different duty stations, Lovejoy, Arthur, and their family moved to the Trunkline station in nearby Pollock. Lovejoy loved the roles of devoted and loving wife, mother, and friend. As a resident of Pollock for nearly fifty years, she was an active member of the Pollock United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and served for 15 years as Treasurer of the United Methodist Women’s group. She was well known in the Pollock area for her buttery chocolate chip cookies that oozed the love with which they were made and crock pot enchiladas anxiously anticipated at church socials and family gatherings. She also helped organize regular dinner socials for students at the Wesley Foundation of Northwestern State University in Natchitoches. Lovejoy and Arthur celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in 2013, prior to his passing that Fall.
Lovejoy, age 93, entered into eternal rest on Monday May 1, 2023. She is preceded in death by her husband Arthur, her parents Lucille and Otto Hannich, and her sister Evelyn Utz.
