GAEDA considering litigation response

By JIM BUTLER

GAEDA will hold a special meeting this morning to consider options relating to litigation filed by former member John Callis.

The Journal reported Tuesday on the suit that seeks repayment by the executive director for alleged overpayments of salary and for payment of Callis’ legal and related costs.

The Greater Alexandria Economic Development Authority will meet at 9 a.m. at its new quarters, 720 Murray Street.

The agenda posted Tuesday morning includes a motion to first go into executive session to discuss the matter, an option provided under the state’s public meetings statute.

Following the closed talks commissioners will:
  • Consider retention of separate counsel for co-defendant Executive Director Angela Varnado, who Callis alleges owes the agency about $58,000;
  • Authorize its counsel to file necessary pleadings and take appropriate legal action to defend GAEDA’s interests.
The litigation stems from action taken at a February 2024 Authority meeting eventually ruled illegal under the public meetings statute.
