The Louisiana Christian football team will look across the field Saturday night in Oklahoma City at an opponent that knows how it felt to be overmatched in a season-opening game last week.
LCU lines up against Langston Saturday night at 6 in the Sooner Athletic Conference opener for both NAIA teams, who predictably were drubbed last weekend on the road against NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision opponents.
The Wildcats were felled 54-9 at McNeese while the Lions lost 55-7 to Grambling in the Shreveport Kickoff Classic.
LCU’s visit to Lake Charles had highlights for the Wildcats.
They jumped to a quick lead, 3-0, getting a 46-yard Levi Hilborn field goal three minutes into play. McNeese responded with 17 unanswered points, but LCU got into the end zone midway through the second quarter and cut the deficit to 17-9. Quarterback Bryce Perkins scored on a 4-yard run that polished off a 7-play, 49-yard drive.
From there, it was all Cowboys. They scored three TDs in the last five minutes before halftime for a 38-9 lead and cruised afterwards.
McNeese rolled up 39 first downs and 664 total yards. LCU had 10 first downs and 141 total yards.
Jaterrius Johnson led the Wildcats with 46 rushing yards on six carries, including a 31-yarder. Edward Scott Jr. caught four passes for 51 yards.
LCU got 57 passing yards from Perkins, who went 3 of 12, and 65 yards on 6-for-15 aim by Phillip Johnson.
Top Wildcats tacklers were Brandon Jackson (8), and Donald Voorhies and Kendal Rowen, both with 7.
After going to Langston, LCU is home Sept. 13 against Wayland Baptist, the only homefield contest for the Wildcats in their first five outings. They do have a three-game homestand late in the season.
