Investigation ongoing into altercation between DC inmate and corrections officer

Deputy Corrections Officers at Rapides Parish Detention Center 1 (downtown) responded to an altercation on June 14 around 2:30 am that occurred in a secure dorm between an inmate and another Deputy Corrections Officer.  

According to the initial investigation, an altercation occurred between the deputy, identified as Alaijah Shanell Keller, 21 of Alexandria and the inmate which resulted in the deputy producing a sharp instrument in an attempt to cut the inmate. Keller, as well as the inmate, were both secured by other deputies. No injuries to either party were reported. 

Sheriff’s Detectives responded to begin their investigation and through that investigation, probable cause was established to obtain arrest warrants on Keller for one count attempted second-degree murder,  one count introduction of contraband into a penal facility and one count malfeasance in office.

On June 14 at approximately 7:30 PM, Keller turned herself in to RPSO and was placed under arrest and booked on her charges. Bond was set at $305,000 and Keller remains in custody at the time of this release. Keller’s employment with RPSO was also terminated.

Sheriff’s Detectives say their investigation is still ongoing.
